Well done Mr Robinson!
This book started out as a pet project for Michael Robinson, "Everyone has one book in them, this is mine" he says, and I congratulate him for it!
Whilst working on a restoration project at Duxford in the mid 90s, a Nick Trudgian print of 4 Spitfires caught his eye at a trade stand. Having bought it he decided to find out which Squadron the Spits belonged to, and who might have been flying them at the time being depicted (Sep 1940). Although the print was signed by 4 veterans, only one signature was a match to the time and place so the hunt was on for the other 3. Titch Havercroft was found close to home, Alan Wright in Devon and Tom 'Jock' Sherrington in the US.
Having spent a great deal of time with these men, listening to their stories and gaining access to their personal photo albums he was asked by Titch what exactly was he going to do with all this. This book is the result. It took seven years to write and was personally funded by Mr Robinson (hence the very limited pressing)- it was well worth it!
If you've read Geoff Wellum's First Light, Tony Bartley's Smoke Trails in the Sky or Brian Kingcome's A Willingness to Die then you've already had an introduction to 92 Squadron and it's many great characters of the Dunkirk/Battle of Britain period. They are all here in this large format single volume, along with many letters, diary entries and their personal photographs. Each man gets a mini biog along with details of the reforming of the Squadron in 1939. At the end of the book we find out what happened to them after 1940, those that survived and those that didn't, including the POWs. Most famous of these has to be their original CO, Sqn Ldr Roger Bushell - Big X at Stalag Luft III and leader of the Great Escape, he was one of the 50 shot by the SS.
92 were one of, if not THE most successful RAF Fighter Squadron in the Battle of Britain - this is a unique book and a great monument to them.
