Collection of Essays
This is a collection of essays around the theme of Art, copyright and culture. The book is divided into four parts (1) Legal Sources (2) Copyright and Art (3) authorship and (4) Bridging the Gap - which deals with justifications for copyright law and the future of copyright exceptions. The vast majority of these essays are written by lawyers and as one would expect with an anthology they are of varying quality. Essays include Art Crimes by Anthony Julius; Moral Rights by Ruth Redmond-Cooper (the director of the Institute of Law) and the Portrait of the Artist as a brand by Professor Celia Lury.
It is difficult to know precisely what the market for this book is intended to be. It isn't really "academic" throughout (although it has its moments) enough to appeal to the copyright lawyer and it is probably a bit too legal to be of interest to most of the general public. But if you are interested in copyright law, it's worth a look and some of the essays are very good. One of the books strengths is the interesting images that are reproduced (sadly in black and white though) which include both Art Rogers original String of Puppies photographs and Jeff Koons sculpture (which were the subject of a major copyright decision on parody in the United States).
