Given all that, nearly everybody who has ever held a camera in their hands has hundreds or perhaps thousands of prints, negatives or slides that for a variety of reasons they may wish to scan into their computer. Added to this computer printers are at a stage that can produce images that rival the quality of traditional photo prints giving everyone with the correct equipment the power to set up a complete digital darkroom. Like most computer related hardware good quality scanners and printers have been decreasing in cost substantially since their introduction and are now at the stage of being quite affordable for the home enthusiast. Using a scanner correctly is the essential first step to producing good quality images via the computer. A Simple Guide to Digital Scanning has been written in a no-nonsense simple style and is designed to give both the more experienced & novice scanner the necessary information to assist them to produce better quality images. Too too simple!2
I borrowed this book from my local library. I would not buy it. The author's approach is really too twee. There are a few good tips but there's far more padding than meat. There are typos by the dozen suggesting very sloppy editing and the author has some funny ideas too. He thinks a digital camera is a scanner of sorts. Granted, it (sort of) is when you upload into a PC, but not when you press the shutter release! If you know absolutely nothing about image editing, then a quick afternoon read will give you your first smattering, but it's not worth keeping it as a reference work. Read it and bin it - or take it back to your library!!
