Star Quality5
This book is a rare example in comics. It is a title that was kept alive by its publisher because of its critical acclaim rather than its high sales. And quite rightly, whichever way you look at it it's a good read. It's a heavily character driven and adult drama that explores both family and emnity and creates a whole city that has as much personality as its human cast.
If you like sophisticated, yet fun, storytelling you'll like this. However there's more to the book, James Robinson is a scholarly in his love of comics and brings references from throughout Starman's extensive history to add a depth of history to what is an already pretty fully realised fictional world. His notes in the back of this volume (credit to DC for including them) show just how much thought this brilliant man put into his masterwork. But don't worry if you've never heard of Starman before, he was never popular before Robinson got his hands on him and Robinson tells you all you need to know in any case.
So if you like the idea of a reluctant hero who'd rather re-stock his collectables store than be out fighting crime, yet finds himself in the situation where he has to become a hero regardless, then you'll like this. If you like serious and psycological storytelling with plenty of humour and emotion you'll like this, if you just want brightly coloured artwork and, readability and lots of action you will like this. In fact I'm going to stick my neck out and say you WILL like this.
Also with 16 issues it should keep you occupied for a while, (making it worth the price) though you may not want to put it down once you get started.

One of the best runs of issues of any monthly title5
This volume is the first of six planned that will collect the entire STARMAN run by James Robinson and Tony Harris. Volume 1 contains issues 0-16, 17 issues in total. There is a similar style of literate storytelling present that brings to mind Neil Gaiman's Sandman and I would recommend this volume to anyone who enjoyed that series (now available in fantastic Absolute editions).
