Fantasy-style biography5
This reprint of a 1870's original biography of Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, reads like a fantasy novel at times, while at the same time steeped in facts. With language and scenes evoking the spirit of Middle Ages, one wonders if another famous Mertonian, JRR Tolkien, was not under the inspiration of this book; the final chapters in which the cursed fate of de Montfort family climaxes, are especially masterful.
