Synopsis
Feedback from users of the "Student's Guide to Writing" suggested that some students find it hard to make time to read a book from cover to cover, and need a quick, problem-solving approach to improving their writing. This is what is offered in Peck and Coyle's new book "Write it Right". "Write it Right" offers advice in short 'modules' which target particular tasks (such as applications or essays) or common problems (like punctuation). It will be ideal for students who are short of time, but nevertheless want to improve their writing.
About the Author
JOHN PECK and MARTIN COYLE are lecturers in English at Cardiff University. They are the authors of the highly recommended The Student's Guide to Writing, also published by Palgrave Macmillan.
Customer Reviews
Good guide for polishing your English.
The book is very easy to read, and is an excellent guide for students with English as their first language. Learn how to write clear sentences, and how to spot grammar mistakes.
The information is made easier to digest because it adopts a problem solving approach to grammar mistakes that are commonly made by students. Regarding the style of the book, the authors tend to repeat the same information throughout the book in hope that their message is reinforced. However, students who are conditioned to analysing concise texts might find this confusing because the repeated information is not always clearly indicated. As a note of caution, under the letter writing section, the convention of writing the date under the recipient's address is not common in England. I was taught to write the date after my own address, and this is further evidenced by my sister's education, which represents recent practice.
Overall, this is a good buy for any student, and it can be read within 2 days.
This book will improve your writing!
Whilst aimed at students, this book will prove indispensable to anyone who wishes to improve their writing. All the standard topics are covered, such as punctuation and grammar. But, the authors also provide excellent advice on matters such as writing clearly, essay structure and common errors.
Most books of this type are dull and boring to read. 'Write it Right' is a cut above the rest; the authors have created a superbly useful book that will fuel the reader's desire to enhance their writing.
