Product Description

One Boy, One Journey, One Dark Destiny In his palace at Inuyama, Lord lida Sadamu, warlord of the Tohan clan, surveys his famous nightingale floor. Its surface sings at the tread of every human foot, and no assassin can cross it. But 16-year-old Otori Takeo, his family murdered by lida's warriors, has the magical skills of the Tribe - preternatural hearing, invisibility, a second self - that enable him to enter the lair of the Tohan. He has love in his heart and death at his fingertips...Across the Nightingale Floor, Book 1 in the Tales of the Otori trilogy, is a stunningly powerful novel. An epic story for readers young and old. Set in a mythical, feudal, Japanese land, a world both beautiful and cruel, the intense love story of two young people takes place against a background of warring clans, secret alliances, high honour and lightning swordplay.

...set in a mythical, feudal Japanese land... Against this savage backdrop two teenagers find their destiny in a doomed love.

The Times (T2), 21 August 02
In a genre as full of traps for the unwary as the nightingale floor itself, Hearn has crossed the first part with honour.

Sainsbury's Magazine, 01 September 02
...starts well and just gets better and better... an exciting mix of civil war, secrecy and supernatural skills.

Customer Reviews

my god it's good5
This book is one of my favourite books I must say. It's exciting, well written and absolutely one of the best.
It's about a young boy named Takeo, who's living in the mountains with his family. They're all living in harmony, but one day, when Takeo came home from one of his long walks in the forrest, he sees an army, who's attacking their village. he tries to find his family, but doesn't. The "boss" of the army sees him, and demand some of the warriors to kill him. but Takeo is very lucky, 'cause a man named Shikery Otori comes and saves him. Now the real story begins, and I won't tell you more. that would just make the book boring.
