Product Description

This book has been written to help candidates sitting their professional examination in anaesthesia in order that they may have at their disposal the detailed anatomical knowledge necessary for the day to day practice of anaesthesia. Unlike a textbook of anatomy, which must cover all parts of the body with equally exhaustive thoroughness, this book concentrates particularly on areas of special relevance to anaesthesia and points out features of practical importance to anaesthetic technique. The text is divided into nine sections; the respiratory pathway, the heart, the vertebral canal, the peripheral nerves; The Autonomic Nervous System; The Cranial Nerves; The Orbit and its contents; The Anatomy of Pain and Zones of Anaesthetic Interest.

The eighth edition has fully expanded and updated text; and includes new and improved illustrations.

"I don′t suppose God knows more anatomy!"

From the Back Cover
This book has been written by one of the great teachers of anatomy, working closely with two well–known teachers of anaesthesia. The book provides the detailed anatomical knowledge vital for the safe practice of anaesthesia, and is aimed at those preparing for professional examinations in anaesthesia and intensive care.

Unlike a general textbook of anatomy, which must cover the entire body, this book concentrates on areas of particular relevance to anaesthesia, highlighting features of practical importance to anaesthetists. The text is divided into nine sections: the respiratory pathway, the heart, the vertebral canal and its contents, the peripheral nerves, the autonomic nervous system, the cranial nerves, the anatomy of pain, and zones of anaesthetic interest. A new chapter on the orbit and its contents has been added to the final section.

The eighth edition has been expanded and fully updated, and includes new and enhanced illustrations.

It ain't all that2
This is the standard, traditional, staple anatomy diet for the Primary FRCA. It does not deserve to be.

There is only one colour used in the entire book: yellow. That is saying something for a book on anatomy. This yellow accompanies various shades of black and white for all illustrations. I have found the illustrations to be poor, particularly in terms of thinking in three dimensions.

I think Gray's anatomy does a much better job of illustrating the complex airway anatomy and vascular areas that anaesthetists are interested in. It also better illustrates cranial nerve anatomy such as that around the orbit. The A-Z covers everything else.

The only plus for the book is that it only focuses on the anatomy that anaesthetists are interested in and that comes up in the exam. Everything you read will be relevant. The diagrams are bad for learning anatomy but probably easy to reproduce in an exam.

This is an expensive book and a waste of money in my opinion.
