Product Description

Dystocia or failure to progress in labor is the main reason for cesarean deliveries. The second edition of this successful text focuses on simple non–invasive interventions to prevent or treat difficult labor. It describes positions, movements and techniques based on principles of anatomy, physiology and psychology of childbirth.

The Labor Progress Handbook is organized by stage of labor for easy reference, enabling the care giver to quickly identify appropriate low cost, low risk interventions and treat dystocia effectively, at an early stage before it becomes severe. The new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated and includes a new chapter on assessing progress in labor, together with new sections on managing labor pain, normal labor and additional positions and maneuvers. The rationale for all techniques is included based on the authors′ clinical experience and wherever possible on the underlying evidence base.

∗ New edition of essential resource for anyone caring for women in labor

∗ Brings Together a wealth of evidence–based information and clinical expertise

∗ ′Focuses on non–invasive techniques to assist the progress of labor

∗ Emphasis on maternal comfort, support and safety

∗ Encourages thoughtful, evidence–based diagnosis and intervention

∗ Contains clear and simple illustrations, which complement the text

From Reviews:

′The focus of support, position, maternal comfort, and safety is one that should be used by anyone caring for laboring women. It encourages thoughtful diagnosis and intervention in an ordered and sensible manner.′

Fantastic book for promoting normality5
I actually never came across this book as a student but have recently bought it as a NQ midwife and wish I'd had it earlier. Denis Wash recommended it at a recent study day and its certainly given me a lot of tips and answered questions that I didn't even know I had.

There are chapters on normal labour, positions, psycho-emotional state, auscalation, monitoring progress, OP position, what to do when there's no progress, fatal malposition, prolonged labour, non-pharmalogical pain relief.

I really think this book is going to help develop my practice a lot and hopefully mean that I will become increasingly more proactive in aiding women to have the best birth expereince possible.

good5
i have only been a student midwife for 4 months and have found this book to be a really good and easy read so much so that it has given me an insight to the complicated childbirth we are due to start next month

the toolkit at the end of the book which discuss the different positions and comfort measure are really usefull and i have been able to use this advice in my practice on placement

Amazing help for difficult birth5
I am not a nurse or midwife, but when my doctor told me I was to give birth to a large baby due to his analysis of the ultrasound (he basically tried to scare me out of natural birth), I searched franctically for help online. This book is excellent for women who want to own their birthing process and not leave it all to the healthcare practionners. I currently live in Germany, did not attend prenatal classes because of language barrier, and it helped me understand better the various birthing positions and how they can help. At birth, I remembered all of it, and my partner was right there with me. Even though I had unforeseen complications with my hips, it made it all possible for me to try first for a natural birth, even if we had to end it with a cesarian for the health of the baby.
