Editorial Reviews

Review
"This book makes an excellent companion for the junior doctor in the Emergency Department or the Admissions Unit.... [It Provides] the essentials in an easy to use format and comes highly recommended as an at–your–fingertips companion." (Acute Medicine Journal, December 2008)

“It is a handy book, especially for doctors in training who need immediate help in managing a medical emergency. I can recommend it without hesitation.” (Hospital Doctor)

"This excellent little book was written for junior medical staff. However as a concise vade–mecum for the anaesthetist it would be extremely valuable." (Anaethesia & Intensive Care)

From the Back Cover

Customer Reviews

not as good as the previous edition; now condensed into lists and tables3
I loved the previous edition of this book. During my PRHO and early SHO years this was the book that got me through those tough oncalls in one piece. The previous edition seemed to be crammed full of concise, insightful, unassailable advice. At the time, a unique feature was that the first 100 pages were entirely problem based e.g. a chapter on 'hypotension' rather than relying on you to have already made the diagnosis.
The only problem was that it did not contain the overarching comprehensive detail of the 'oxford handbook of acute medicine'

In this new edition the authors have tried to make it more comprehensive but have heavily edited their own idiomatic text and created a book which consists entirely of lists and flow charts. Unfortunately it was never going to be as comprehensive as the OHAM which has a tiny font spread over 800 pages.

Its still a good book but a little of the magic has been edited away.

If you only have room in your pocket for one book then the 'oxford handbook of acute medicine' remains the definitive text.

Fantastic reference for on-call medics4
Excellent book. The use of flow charts and tables is useful and comprehensive. The only thing that I think would improve this book are the addition of 'when to admit' criteria as found in the Oxford Handbook of Acute Medicine, and make it smaller and pocket sized. The addition of these things would make this great book perfect.

Excellent book5
This is a very good book, its everything you need and pays attention to important detail that the oxford handook of medicine does not have! its very handy during A&E rotations and it gives you a step by step guide of how to manage or investigate conditions. This is the best acute medicine book to use especially for those who just started their careers as doctors!! If only i can thank the authors in person as this book has helped me through some tough nights!
