Editorial Reviews

Review
“The book excels in three unusual ways. The first is that all the material is well written and generously illustrated with helpful colored diagrams. The second is that the general principles are not only clearly explained but supplemented with useful practical details. Finally, he uses the web imaginatively and introduces the students to website sources of information on building construction, materials and regulations.” (International Journal of Ambient Energy, January 2009)

From the Author
Hi,
Just a quick few words about Building in the 21st Century.

If you are just at the beginning of your studies you will probably try the Internet as a good source of information for the course assignments. It is easy to enter `buzz words' into a search engine and up comes a wealth of information. However is it relevant to building in the UK? Is it correct? Does it enable you to understand the theories behind the concept?

In contrast text books may have information about building in the UK but are they up to date? Building in the 21st Century has been written over the past year and includes suggested websites to ensure the latest technical data and statistics can be researched. The principles of modern construction techniques and materials are explained including full colour graphics and text. Technical detailing will help any construction student from GCSE level through to BTEC Higher National Certificate and first year degree level therefore should be useful over many years of study. The National Award, Certificate and Diploma students will find it particularly useful though.

Often specialist text books have been written for higher level courses. They use specialist terms that can be difficult to understand whilst trying to learn the basics. Building in the 21st Century has full explanations without `dumbing it down' to become too simplistic. For example the first three chapters cover the many topics in surveying. If you miss a lecture about levelling or cannot remember how to complete a levelling booking sheet just look at pages 30 - 46 for help.

I have tried to include the information required to complete the various BTEC / EdEXCEL Units especially where students have found it difficult to find relevant information from other sources. The topics of `energy' and `pollution' for example are of particular importance approached from the scientific, social, and construction view points enabling a holistic approach to construction and the environment.
The one volume makes it easy to carry with you making it ideal in the classroom environment as well as at home completing your assignments.
My teaching colleagues who have viewed the book have commented such as `a friendly approach and easy to use book', and `lots of useful details and well presented worked examples'.

The book should be available in October ready for your first assignments. If you find the book useful please paste your views and comments on the Amazon web page.

Good luck with your studies
