Happy advice
I must have read a different book to the previous reviewer! I found it full of helpful, kind advice. I bought it when I had my little boy and didn't notice it being particularly gender biased. What she does say is that you can encourage traits in your child - little boys are often good at puzzles - make sure you give your daughter puzzles too! Little girls tend to be more interested in books - make sure you read to your son!
As with most aspects of childcare, as everyone's child is an individual (makes the world a more interesting place that we're all that way), you have to pick and choose the advice that best suits your style, your inclination and your offspring! I'm not a Gina Ford fan - but that doesn't mean I've not found things in her books that have been useful; particularly when my daughter arrived and I had to deal with two.
I would recommend this book - it covers a vast area of ground - but I wouldn't say it was the ONLY one I'd want on my bookshelf.
Essential book for being a mum
Complete Baby and Childcare: Everything You Need to Know for the First Five YearsI bought the pregnancy book and found it contained everything you need to know (just as the book states!). Miriam Stoppard is a name you know you can trust and it is a good reference book for everything you encounter and need to handle when you become parents for the first time. Highly recommended reading.
Offensive!!
Unless you are parents of little girls do not buy this book. I am a proud mum to 2 beautiful boys and found the contents of this book offensive. In it little boys are called "dirty, lazy, rough, slow to name but a few whereas girls are considered smarter, more friendly and basically much quicker to progress at every stage. I found myself becoming more and more annoyed and eventually filed it in the bin!!
