Product Description

Nicholas Parsons and Paul Merton introduce four classic archive episodes of the ever-popular comedy panel game. Just as uproariously funny - and terrifically popular - today as when it first began on BBC Radio 4 in 1967, "Just a Minute" challenges contestants to speak for one minute on a given subject without repetition, hesitation or deviation. Its mix of irreverent fun and ferocious competition has always attracted stellar names from the world of comedy and theatre, all of whom pit their wits - and their wit - against regular players including Kenneth Williams, Derek Nimmo, Clement Freud and Peter Jones. The guests include Paul Merton, Barry Cryer, Libby Purves, Miles Kington and Maureen Lipman. Each episode is preceded by extracts from a fascinating conversation between Nicholas Parsons and Paul Merton, in which they good-humouredly reflect upon the enormous appeal of the game, the various techniques for playing it, the numerous guest players who have take part over the years, and their favourite moments in these particular instalments.

If you are reading this, then you probably already have Just a Classic Minute 1 to 4. So what is different?

In the first place, these are 4 truly classic episodes - none of your curiousos such as when Kenneth Williams was chairman as in Just a Classic Minute 2. These episodes come from 1977 to 1988, and are just great.

Secondly, and very importantly, instead of an introduction to each episode by Nicholas Parsons, there are instead some long conversations between Nicholas and Paul Merton. Not only do they discuss the episode of JAM itself, but they also go much wider, and put different aspects, such as the role of women in the show, in greater context. This double CD set is worth getting, if only for these conversations.

Two excerpts from these episodes have appeared on the first compilation way back in 1992 called "Silver Minutes" (only available second hand on cassette, but very well worth listening to). However, if you have "Silver Minutes", then you obviously are the sort of collector who would want this because of the sheer quality of the episodes and the introduction.

Overall, get it! It's very well worth it, and long may there be additional releases of Just a Classic Minute.
