Customer Reviews

Not for beginners!2
I bought this audio course because I wanted something I could learn in my car, and this is advertised as being suitable for complete beginners.

I'm not too bad at languages, and having listened to some basic Mandarin before I thought this would be suitable for me.

But when I listened to it, the pace is ridiculously fast! Within a minute or two of starting the CD it goes on to some pretty complicated sentences. I understand that you're meant to repeat each phrase a number of times, but there don't seem to be any pauses built in to the CD for repetition so you have to keep re-playing and pausing the track. There also don't seem to be any exercises for speaking. (To be fair, I only got 5 minutes in before giving up.)

So if you are after a list of words, buy this CD. If you are looking for something that will teach you how to use them in conversation, buy Collins Easy Learning Mandarin, it is much, much better.

Excellent book, effective method5
I got quite a few books and software for learning Chinese before finding this one. It works! It teaches you all the practical phrases you'll need, it's clear, interesting and effective. I recommend it wholeheartedly! I wish they had level 2...
