Average customer review:Product Description
Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is an increasingly popular approach to qualitative inquiry. This handy text covers its theoretical foundations and provides a detailed guide to conducting IPA research.
Extended worked examples from the authors' own studies in health, sexuality, psychological distress and identity illustrate the breadth and depth of IPA research.
Each of the chapters also offers a guide to other good exemplars of IPA research in the designated area. The final section of the book considers how IPA connects with other contemporary qualitative approaches like discourse and narrative analysis and how it addresses issues to do with validity. The book is written in an accessible style and will be extremely useful to students and researchers in psychology and related disciplines in the health and social sciences.

Editorial Reviews
Review
'It is not often I can use 'accessible' and 'phenomenology' in the same sentence, but reading the new book, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis…certainly provides me the occasion to do so. I can say this because these authors provide an engaging and clear introduction to a relatively new analytical approach' --The Weekly Qualitative Report
Customer Reviews
Thorough and helpful
As a PhD student in hopefully the later stages I have found this book really helpful as it explores the thoeretical underpinnings of IPA in detail and with great clarity. The section on worked examples is also helpful as it allows the reader to see the method in action. I really like the idea of the third section where current issues are examined in a critically reflectve manner although I would want to see this section expanded in future editions. The section on comparing IPA with other phenomenological methods and the contrasts with other qualitative methods help situate this method within the wider contexts of qualitative methods.
a Godsend
an important contribution to the growing field of qualitative study, and a valuable tool for those wanting to research topics that do not fit into the Newtonian science model.
From a long term IPAer
Thank you for this book. In the process of writing up my IPA study, it brought me up bang up to date on the ever evolving IPA 'project' which promises exciting, potential, future, projects and connections with other disciplines. It is non jargonistic and explains difficult concepts in clear language. All supervisors of students using IPA as an approach should read it.
