Reflective practice is at the heart of effective teaching, and this book helps you develop into a reflective teacher of mathematics. Everything you need is here: guidance on developing your analysis and self-evaluation skills, the knowledge of what you are trying to achieve and why, and examples of how experienced teachers deliver successful lessons.
The book shows you how to plan lessons, how to make good use of resources and how to assess pupils' progress effectively. Each chapter contains points for reflection, which encourage you to break off from your reading and think about the challenging questions that you face as a new teacher.
The book is supplemented by a companion website, with:
" Videos of real lessons so you can see the skills discussed in the text in action
" Links to a range of sites that provide useful additional support
" Extra planning and resource materials.
If you are training to teach mathematics this book will help you to improve your classroom performance, by providing you with practical advice, but also by helping you to think in depth about the key issues. It also provides examples of the research evidence that is needed in academic work at Masters level, essential for anyone undertaking an M-level PGCE.
Paul Chambers was formerly course leader for PGCE mathematics at Edge Hill University.

An indispensable book for all PGCE maths students!
I am currently doing my PGCE in secondary mathematics, and have found this book to be really useful both in covering the University taught content, and in helping with compiling the QTS standards log, the critical incident reflections and the research essay. Away from the academic content of the course, I have also found the book to be really useful when it comes to actually teaching mathematics in the class room, which when it comes down to it is what the PGCE course is all about!
The chapters take in a range of subjects - the chapters on current government initiatives with regards to the National Curriculum and Every Child Matters policy provide a useful overview as to the role and responsibility of teachers, whilst the chapter on assessment brings together the role of Ofsted, the growing importance of SATs and how assessment for learning can be successfully implemented.
Other chapters are much more orientated towards actually teaching in the classroom. There is a chapter on lesson planning, and on the incorporation of starters and plenary activities within the lesson. Examples are provided, and interviews included with maths teachers and pupils giving their feedback about what methods are successful and why.
There is also a large chapter that discusses how to best teach different mathematical topics, algebra, geometry, statistics, mental methods etc.
Lastly there is also an accompanying website which contains links to all the websites referenced in the text, and contains about 10 video clips taken from actual lessons as examples of good teaching practice. There is even a short video of a Japanese maths lesson, so you can compare and contrast different teaching styles overseas.
As is probably clear from my (rather lengthy) review, I really liked this book - and though I have used a variety of texts to help me through my PGCE year, (like Sue Cowley's Getting the Buggers to Behave) I would definitely recommend this to all potential maths PGCE students.
marvellous
If you're going to just buy one book on teaching mathematics, it should be this one. I found it relevent, easy to read and full of useful advice. Highly recommended!
