Product Description

Tom Wolfe once described Hunter S. Thompson as the finest comic writer of the 20th century. Thompson was indeed this, and more - an apt observer of the American scene for almost four decades, the founding father of ""Gonzo journalism"" and an inspiration to many. With his death, a vacuum was created that remains to be filled. In The Gonzo Way, wife Anita Thompson pays tribute to her late husband as a writer and as a citizen, through her own words and through interviews with those who knew him best, including Tom Wolfe, George McGovern and Douglas Brinkley.

Customer Reviews

She honours her man3
In this book Anita honours her husband and definitely clebrates his life. She told me herself that she had to pare down buckets of amazing material into this slim volume, at the request of the publisher. I think this is a shame as a large part of the book is what other (famous) people said about Hunter. All great stuff. As I told her I would have liked to hear more of her own voice. This came out more towards the end and I liked hearing it. Hopefully she will write another book!

Picking up the pieces...4
A slim, yet nevertheless brave work. I was worried on ordering (pre-publication) that it might prove to be a mere money-making piggyback on Dr Thompson's reputation. But instead I discovered a touching piece of catharsis for his widow via a number of her valuable insights into the late great author's life which may otherwise have been left unrecorded. Don't get me wrong: when I use the term 'great author' I mean it, because Hunter Thompson's opus will go down in future history as ranking alongside, if not ahead of, other 'greats' in American literature; Twain, Hemingway,Steinbeck, Kerouac et al. notwithstanding. Anita is not a 'great author' of the same mold, but she has had the courage to write a great little book which anyone who admires HT's erstwhile stance should buy.
