Dark, Brooding and Restrained
William Hope Hodgson spent some years in the merchant navy in the latter end of the 19th century and this book shows it: his knowledge of the nautical way of life is very apparent throughout the book. The life at sea feels convincing in all aspects, although for the modern reader it may take a little while to get used to remembering that the hapless crew are at sea on a tall-ship.
The book opens quietly on a ship which the narrator has heard unsettling rumours about. For a while nothing happens. As odd events take place the atmosphere slowly and gradually changes- nothing so sledgehammer-like as the nightmare events of `The House on the Borderland'. The unease builds and relaxes, inexorably rising to the point where the truth behind the seas and the ship become apparent.
The latter sequences of the book are horrific and at the same time maintain the understated feel- as if being related (as they are) by someone in extreme shock.
Well worth buying, as are Hodgson's other novels.
