An excellent book about a ship and air group late in W.W. II
This book is an excellent summary of both a ship and air group at the end of World War II. It was written by two men who were in Air Group 12 on the Randolph. The air group was led by Commander Charles Crommelin, the namesake of the book and the third of the five Crommelin brothers. Collectively, the Crommelins are the most dedicated family in U.S. naval history. The book takes the reader from the air group 12's training to their time on the Randolph. After the first and second raids on Tokyo and supporting the Iwo Jima invasion, the Randolph anchored in Ulithi lagoon for some rest. A Japanese kamikaze hit the ship, putting it out of action for about a month. Commander Crommelin was detatched to the aircraft carrier Hornet, and helped direct that ship and task force's aircraft in raids over Japan and Okinawa until he was killed in a mid-air collision at the end of March. The air group returned to action, flying until late May over Okinawa. These stressful times are well depicted in the book, which makes good use of individual memories of members of the air group. One gains a good idea of not only the action, but also the trying times for the offficers and men of the Randolph and Air Group 12. I found it well-written and accurate throughout.
