Great art, bland writing
From the team that brought you the awesome Kingdom Come comes a great looking soft cover graphic novel. If it were just the art that counted this would be 5*'s but unfortunately the gorgeous art is let down by a disappointing storyline. The tale never really gets going and because of its short length is terminally hamstrung. The tale is not involving or deep enough and does not do justice to the great job done on the artwork. A masterpiece to look at but not to read :(
What an incredible story
A truly great work of art. Personally I love Alex Ross, and this is a great example of his incredible talent. An absolute must for any Batman Fan. And If you liked that I suggest you read (in my opinion his best) Kingdom Come.
Exceptional graphic novel
While the story for Batman : War on Crime is a simple one and one which gives Bruce Wayne cause to reflect the reasons he donned cape and cowl it is the perfect vehicle for the sumptuous Alex Ross artwork which tells it.
Ross' renditions of Gotham and Batman are lush and intoxicating and the final scene of the Dark Knight looking over Gotham is fantastic. The oversize format is the perfect showcase and I can only imagine at how diminished the effect would have been if it were produced in a standard format.
If you like simple but powerful stories and want to enjoy some exceptional artwork pick up War on Crime - you won't be disappointed.
