Synopsis
The goal of The Practical Pagan is to help people realise that Paganism is not about what has to be done but rather about freedom to explore and experience. For people accustomed to organised religions, this new freedom can be perplexing. That is where The Practical Pagan becomes very useful. This book offers an overview of issues that you may encounter in the Pagan community and offers suggestions, hints, and down-to-earth help for those who are feeling a little lost. Included are discussions about: - What it means to be a Pagan. - Getting involved in the Pagan community. - Myths about Paganism. - Choosing a specific path. - Joining an organisation. - Paganism and relationships. - Educating yourself about Paganism. Becoming Pagan does not mean that you need to immediately go out and acquire a whole new wardrobe, redecorate your whole house, abandon your old friends and acquaintances. The Practical Pagan will serve as a guide and a resource to those starting out or those who are still seeking answers.
Customer Reviews
Common Sense, that's all it is.
Perhaps since becoming a pagan my viewpoint on everyday situations from a pagan point of view has flown naturally for me, but "The Practical Pagan" has offered me little but the realisation that I already view everyday life in a pagan way. As the title says, the book offers common sense suggestions for how to deal with everyday problems from a pagan persepective, and suggestions about how to deal with situations pagans may come across, such as the persecution from Christian fundimentalists. An example of the advice received would be quote "Get your income tax returns in on time" p226, or "Do not neglect your dental health" p230, the advice that if you are being investigated for child abuse it's a good idea to keep your house clean, or advice that you should use condoms in sex. This is not advice worth paying for, and the book is mostly filled with these things that we all know already.
Where the book is useful may be found in advice on areas such as joining an order or grove, or other new experiences, although this advice is often very much common sense, that being what it is, common sense!
The author is a pagan in the US, and the book is written with only Americans in mind. Dana Eilers, being a lawyer is often quick to point to solutions involving legal action, and this action is specifically the legal action that Americans can take.
There are 236 pages that are in fairly large print. The book is a quick read from cover to cover.
A Fantastic book for Pagan and Pagan curious people
This book was just fantastic, its written by a real person with real and personal views. Dana tells it as it is and shes not wrong! I HIGHLY advise if you are pagan or pagan curious, or even non pagan to read this book as it is written for everyone!
It covers most of the paths chosen by paganists and gives you some really good advise as a pagan and some really good advise as a person. Deffinatly a 5 star in my eyes!!
