The use of animal familiars began long before the Middle Ages in Europe. It can be traced to ancient Egypt and beyond. To most people, a familiar is a witch's companion, a small animal that helps the witch perform magick, but you don't have to be a witch or believe in familiars to have one. A physical familiar in the guise of a pet may already be living in your home. Or you may have an astral-bodied familiar if you are intensely drawn to a particular creature that is impossible to have in the physical. There are advantages to befriending a familiar. They make excellent companions, even if they are astral creatures. If you work magick, the familiar can aid by augmenting your power. Familiars can warn you of danger, and they are good healers. Most books on animal magick are written from the viewpoint of the Native American but this book takes the reader into the field of animal familiars from the European pagan viewpoint. It gives practical meditations, rituals, and power chants for enticing, befriending, understanding, and using the magick of familiars.

Absolutly Awsome!
This book is great for beginners, but I'm sure that experts would love it too! I'm only 13, but I understand it and can read it easily. Luckily, I live where there are stores that carry alot of incense and candles, which most rituals reqire. I love D.J. Conway's books beacause alot of the rituals and meditations are just plain fun!
Nice, but better stuff exists
This is a nice book for learning more about animals, but that's its only benefit. The meditations and rituals, IMO, should be used only as brainstorming material for creating one's own ritual. In addition, while I have not found any blatant flaws in this book, Conway has a reputation among pagans (whom I highly respect and agree with) for passing off her personal beliefs as mythological fact. Still, I have found the book helpful and containing some good info and brainstorming material. Just be sure to question the material presented, and recognize that nothing beats hard, personal work.
GREAT - Have a pet ? Buy this book !
I've been practicing the Craft for the past 15 years (including all sorts of ceremonial magick too) and found this book a great tool to get to know (and to communicate to) my cats better; I am not sure this is the book you'd buy to learn how to create your own elemental (it also depends by your level of knowledge); the Wiccans will find an interesting resource of informations on the little (not only the little ones though) creatures that Our Lords have created.
