Valerie Worth - Crone's Book of Magical Charms and Spells Book Review
This book isn't for immediate beginner's at all!! It is more directed to the advanced practitioner who can understand the hidden references or in fact, for anyone who has an interest in the occult and poetic literature. I can see how this well-wriiten book can speak to people with diverse interests in this genre. I am a practicing witch myself and I must say it's not really a 'wiccan' book; as it states it is a book of charms and spells which can be incorporated into everyday life (to a certain degree). The text is written in very olde English, but I think this is the plan of the author Valerie Worth. As it states in the prefix, she didn't write the book so the rituals could be practiced as such, but so that they could be read and respected in the honour of tradition. Moreover, I think she directed this to the reader more than the practitioner, so one can use their imagination and interpret the old ways for themselves. I, myself, would never practice from this book as there are so mny simpler ways nowadays to use witchcraft to benefit oneself. I might use one of the amulets for self-power, but would never directly spell-craft. All in all, Valerie Worth portrays traditon in a poetic sense and delivers stories as well as practices. This is a great read whatever your beliefs, in order to get into the heads of many diverse practitioners of Valerie's time and how the culture was understood and used throughout the spiritual year.
Nothing particularly worthwhile
I am a practising Witch of many years experience and was interested inobtaining this little book as a small compendium on traditionalWitchcraft. I was very disappointed regarding the cheap presentation inspite of its glossy cover and the ridiculous olde worlde language, i.e.thrice a dozen, jumbled up with sentances in 'modern' english! There wasno reference as to how this book was compiled, whether it was just anindulgence on the part of the author, nor any details regarding research, bibliography etc. The talsimen were crude and the whole thing looked asthough it was dashed off in a matter of days. How it ever got published Ifail to comprehend. Though this is not a Wiccan book, anyone seekingsensible information on old traditions would be far better off readingDoreen Valiente. As for the brews and somewhat disgusting spells, I foundit all very silly. The author's husband 'apologises' for some of thelatter advising the reader not to dabble - why bother to publish this? Onecan find enough 'eye of toad' etc. in Disney culture, along withgreen-faced warty Witches! These have at least a 'fun' aspect. Did MsWorth make these up perhaps? With one or two exceptions the illustrationswere an irrelevence with regard to the text and no acknowledgementsexisted. I would not even recommend this book purely as an interestingadjunct to a collection of magick books.
Not for immediate beginners
This is an inspiring and magickal book but it is not for beginners because it does not involve anything about tools, meditation, visualisation, wiccan ethics or anything a beginner needs to know. This book is written for the experienced beginner, someone who has mastered the basics. For beginners I would advise you read anything by Silver Ravenwolf especially Solitary Witch (absolutley everything is explained in the confinds of this book), To light a sacred flame, To ride a silver broomstick or Exploring Spellcraft by Gerina Dunwich, Bucklands complete book of witchcraft, The craft by Dorothy Morrison and Spellweaving by Sally Morningstar. This is not for beginners because some of the concepts may be hard to understand and you must already know hoe to prepare yourself for spellcasting. Contained within are very old inspiring spells and are fantastically magickal!! She gives a great section on making talismans and what to inscribe onto them and a section on sabbats (samhain, imbolc etc). A definite buy for when you are more experienced with the craft. Blessed Be!!!
