Customer Reviews

A classic. A "must have".5
This book changed my life! Iread it about 13 years ago and it was the deciding factor in my going to nursing school. (at that time direct entry midwives were illegal in Florida). This book totally reinforces "birth" as a spiritual and natural event. Ina May also stresses the importance of babies in the birthing process and in our lives, as well as the relationship of the mother and father. This book offers positive affirmations of the birthing process that it should be read by anyone who is pregnant or wants to be.

Fabulous- Emphasizing the Emotional Aspect of Birth5
I just finished reading this book. I was interested in learning more about natural childbrith and came away with insight into not only the physical but the essential spirtitual and emotional aspects about birth. I really loved the comments about how both partners(mother and father)need to "get it together" emotionally to be prepared for this event. I also enjoyed the the advice not to complain, that your outlook and attituted affects labor. I am glad to see this book wasn't at all sugarcoated, it dealt with complications in birth and death with such dignity and grace as well as highlighting the amazing success rates of natural childbirth. I had no idea when I started reading it that it was about an alternative "hippie" community. Very different from my personal life but I totally respect all of the individuals who made the decision to live such a simple life and focus on the amazing spirituality that surrounds us all in everday life. A definite must read!

This book is relevant to any midwife or mother-to-be5
I read first this book as a student midwife about 2o years ago. It gives a brilliant insight into what women should be able to acheive. The fact that it is at variance to the normal birthing process in the western world is proof that we don't do it right, not proof that it's too old fashioned or hippy-ish. Read this book and trust that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
