Synopsis
This step-by-step guide is designed to help victims of self-inflicted violence understand why they feel the need to hurt themselves and to take steps to change their behaviour. Most victims tend to be teenage girls or women in their twenties. To hurt themselves is sometimes a way of focusing and controlling overwhelming feelings of chaos. For others, it frees them from the numbness that defends them from the pain of previous abuse. Alderman helps them to explore the reasons for self-abuse and its impact on their lives, and how to break the habit, either through psychotherapy or on their own.
From the Author
I hope you find this book to be interesting and useful!
My hope is that The Scarred Soul will help educate people on the topic of self-inflicted violence. There are numerous activities designed to help you better understand and cope with this difficult issue. Therapists, friends and family members of people who engage in self-inflicted violence can also benefit from reading this book. I wrote this book because the topic is so misunderstood and largely ignored. I hope you find it useful.
Customer Reviews
Excellent Book
I am a cutter. I can not even begin to describe how excellent this book is and how much it has helped me. I thouroughly recommend it to self-harmers, family&friends and professionals alike. Everyone can learn from it. I have spent a lot of money of self-help books to help me to overcome and understand my problem and this one is undoubtedly the best. Not only does it help you and those close to you to understand this very misunderstood behaviour but it also helps you to live with, understand and try and get over your behaviour. It isn't at all forceful and is instead compassionate and tells you to do things in your own time. If you're not ready to stop doing this then don't. It helps you to realise that self-harm isn't all bad, that you shouldn't feel guilty about it, because without it you probably couldn't have survived but helps you to realise that there are other alternatives and overcome it in time.
Thank you Tracy Alderman!
Really helpful and easy to read
I was very impressed with this book. It has really accurate and easy to read information. It helped me a lot to understand my self injury. I realised many things I had not before, like underlying reasons for it, and definitely how my past could have contributed to it. It covers many many important issues surrounding self harm and is a great book to get if you are looking for a book on self harm, I highly reccomend it. It has many helpful exersises for you to do. It is very useful and I like the author's style and her sense of humor makes it an enjoyable read, it is very interesting. This is the one to get!
incredible
I have bought most of the self-harm books available but continue to re-read this one. It is full of activities which enable you to stand back and examine your behaviour and realise personal triggers and people who may provoke you. This is written with a depth, compassion and understanding I have yet to find anywherelse.
