Microsoft Word 2000 has great potential, but it's only as powerful as its user. If you want a tutorial that will help you make the best of your documents, look to Microsoft Word 2000 Step by Step. Catapult, Inc., has teamed up with Microsoft Press to present 16 in-depth lessons covering installation and basic document handling, advanced editing, Web page production and collaboration.

Each well-organised lesson summarises key points, estimates the length of time needed for mastery and highlights each feature for easy reference. Screenshots help the visually oriented and the multimedia examples on the CD-ROM show all the steps necessary for more complex functions, such as inserting hyperlinks.

Though it's not intended as a reference, Step by Step will work well in a pinch or for the basic user. Between the index, table of contents and QuickLook visual guide, you should find the instructions you need quickly and painlessly. A useful tutorial for Microsoft Word
We can all produce documents in Microsoft Word, but I guess most of us use less than 20% of its substantial functionality. This book introduces the reader to, and provides practice in, the rest of the product's features.

As with all the Step by Step series, the book is well structured, and comes with prepared exercises on CD, very easy to install and run. The exercises are well illustrated in the book, and would be straightforward for the novice, as well as the experienced Word user who feels it is about time to learn the product in more depth.

I do feel that it falls a little short of the standard set by other books in the excellent Step by Step series, and is occasionally sloppy. However, don't let this stop you buying what is still very good value for a tutorial.
