Microsoft Access 2000 Step by Step
This book was recommended for my MOUS Access exam which I am planning to take. I am about a third of the way through the book, and am so far finding it easy to follow. However, being an experienced Access user, I am not entirely certain that it follows the most logical route for complete beginners, for example explaining relationships, enforcing referential integrity and cascading updates/deletes before simple queries are covered. I also found some small errors in the book, but these were mostly due to the book being written for US default settings rather than UK default settings. I was able to work round these, but would be confusing for a beginner. I like the multimedia files and enjoy the real life examples. On a personal note, working in PR myself, I can relate to the real life example of working for a PR company.
Not a bad intro for the novice
I am a total access newbie and this book has been my introduction to the software. Overall I think it is very easy to follow and clearly written. However I think it starts from the wrong point, i.e. using a database that has already been compiled to teach you the commands - I would have preferred an approach that started from the ground up. This would start by entering your own data into tables using forms you have designed. The book's approach seems to try to avoid too much input of data by the reader.
Generally the estimates for time taken to cover each chapter are OK apart from Ch 5 which took me over 2 hours opposed to the suggested 30mins!
More than a handbook.
With the daunting Access this book is a saviour. As the other Step by Step books with CD-Rom, it is clear and easy to follow. It is essential self-study kit whether you need guidance on Access or useful reference if you only need help in some points. Easy to read lay-out and a lot of screen pictures. The contents have been clearly broken down in the beginning and the book also has large Index at the back. I don't know how I could have managed without this guide and I have had some training already!
