STEVEN HIATT has worked as an editor and writer for several Bay Area companies, including Apple Computer, Netscape, Progressive Asset Management, and Stanford Research Institute. He is the editor (with Mike Davis) of Fire in the Hearth: The Radical Politics of Place in America (Verso), and is president of Editcetera, a cooperative of publishing professionals. This is a set of gobsmacking insider accounts from people who have been involved at all levels in international finance, enterprise and government. They lay bare the truth behind the facade of international trade, 'development', and 'debt relief'.
Suffice it to say, Wolfensohn's shenanigans at the World Bank are but the tip of the iceberg at that establishment, and the world's most desperate wars (Iraq, Congo...) are perversely beneficial to our comfortable 'developed' lives, allowing us access to cheap mobile phones and an ongoing oil supply... If any of this is at all worrying to you as a citizen of the world, then buy this book!

Topics covered include third world debt, offshore banking, cheap cell phones, Nigeria's oil, Iraq's oil, the Phillipines and export credit agencies. Corruption is what oils the wheels of globalization- it keeps the rich, rich and the poor, poor. Information is revealed in this book which no-one would ever know about or no-one would ever know the truth about at least. It was incredibly eye-opening and sobering to find out how the world works and how human beings oppress other human beings for material gain. An absorbing read.
