GREAT APOCALYPTIC ZOMBIE SAGA!!!!
I love zombies. They are us... inverted. When they enter the scene, you know there's no happy ending. No going back. They are such a massive threat, no character is ever in advantage.
THE WALKING DEAD is a great comic book where we follow a group of several character as they try to survive. There is no goal. There is no mission except just to keep on going. The main characters are RICK (ex-cop), LORI and their son CARL. SHANE is another ex-cop (friend of Rick). ALLEN, DONNA and their twin boys. DALE, an old, bitter man, CAROL, GLENN, SOPHIA and many others they meet along the way.
The beginning of the story shows Rick waking up from a coma (like in that movie 28 Days Later). Except that the hospital is already full of zombies. That's when he find MORGAN and his little boy DUANE. They help him get a car and soon enough, Rick tries to get to Atlanta, where he believes his wife and son are.
But Atlanta is a mess.
There is plenty of gore on these comic books. You won't feel disappointed. And some characters are quite nice. You do get kinda sad when they die. I like the black and white imagery - I guess a color version would be too red for some if you know what I mean. The storyline is nicely conducted and you do get easily into the story. I, for example read all these 300 pages at one go.
The only thing I did not like too much was the drawing of some characters. There are many, many characters in this book and some of them look very close to others... sometimes I had to go back a few pages and see who am I seeing.
But STILL this is a great work.
Not into reading comics but thoroughly enjoyed it and have ordered book 2!
What ever way you dress it up; 'Graphic Novel', it is a Comic!
Now I'm a massive Zombie movie fan and when I heard about 'The Walking Dead' series I was intrigued. I ordered this hardback collection of the first twelve issues based on reviews around the web, despite my reservations of it being a comic. I'm glad I did!
It's beautifully drawn and had me glued to it's pages. The story and caracter development is great and it can be real edge of your seat stuff! I'm glad there are these hardback collections as I couldn't wait a month for the next issue!!!
I have already ordered book two and can't wait to find out what happens next. If your a fan of Zombie movies this is a must.
Magnificent
Without a doubt, one of the finest comic books of recent years. Intelligently written, believable, realistic and thought provoking, if you're a fan of more serious, grown up comic books then this is for you, even if you do not like horror or zombies it is worth giving a try.
Kirkman is a genius and nicely accompanied by talented artists (though I do prefer Adlrad's work from issue #7 onwards) and this book is only the tip of the iceberg. Containing the Days Gone By and Miles Behind Us arcs, compiling volumes 1 and 2 it sets the stage for later events and worse things are always just around the corner.
