unachieved potential
The game programming gems is something definitely unique from other single books / book series. The first volume, game programming gems 1, lived up to its name fantastically - each chapter was a massive eye opener for both up-and-comers and more advanced programmers alike. I say up-and-comers because this series really isn't targetted at beginners.
Game programming gems 2 had some memorable articles, but when reading it you always feel there is a distinct lack of the completeness shown in gems 1.
enter game programming gems 3. on paper, like gems 2, it looks excellent. sadly the content isn't up to the billing.
Make no mistake, gems 3 is an excellent book. However it doesn't seem to be written with the same drive as gems 1.
It is better bought when wanting information on a topic, rather than the magic of gems 1, where you would buy it to find topics to investigate.
High powered
The third book in the Programming Gems series, this is also the most technically advanced and certainly could not be recommended for beginners. However, for the more serious software developer there is much within these pages that could be of use, or at the very least should make you think.
The only drawback, is that with each gem written by a different author, there's the occasional repeat. Just how many random and pseudo-random number generators does one book need?
Of course the benefit of so many authors is that there is a great variety of ideas on display. Recommended to the serious games programmer.
Complete and interesting to read if you really like the subj
This book is just a collection of ideas from various software eng. It is interesting because it gives you an idea of how the other developers think and how they overcame their own problems. This book adds a networking chapter which I think to be of utmost importance since we are on the verge of a new generation of mobile phones based on ip tech.
