Lourie is a clear, sometimes graceful, occasionally quirky writer...it's hard to imagine a better biography coming along.

The best biography on Sakharov
As someone with an interest in the Soviet Human Rights Movement I was naturally interested in Andrei Sakharov but this is a genuinely interesting book for anyone with an interest in twentieth century history.
Obviously the story of Sakharov is fairly well known; physics genius, invents Soviet H bomb, turns human rights activist, receives nobel peace prize, internal exile and later national hero once again. Quite an eventful life.
Those approaching the book with a science background may find there to be scant coverage of this, integral, aspect of his life, but as a non-scientist it was just the right amount for me.
Very well written and immensely readable Lourie is clearly a sympathetic biographer but this remains a great book.
