An old favourite re-published. Old or new to kiting, buy it !
A lot has changed in the world of kites since I first bought this book 20 + years ago. David Pelham's book is however essential. This edition is a direct copy of the Penguin edition, first published in 1976.The only amendments I can see are the addition of email addresses to the directory of kite organisations. For those new to kiting , this is a classic tome , essential on the book case , it has history : techniques and plans . It would be useful to use Pelham's book in combination with more modern texts to ensure full utilisation of the current technology. This book needs no introduction to more seasoned kite makers , who(like me )need a working replacement for that 20 year book which has finally fallen apart after extensive use .
The Coolest Kite Book on the Planet.
My Dad gave me this book in 1976 when I was 12 years old. He's gone now but I still cherish this book, and the next generation actually won commendation for a school project for a camera kite!
This is a truely fantastic and exciting book for a young person, you cannot go wrong with Pelham's book.
Super historical reference and photographs too, and of course the magic black art itself how to make kites that fly! And what kites! the memories I have of scaring the locals with my twilight flying giant bat kite. I nearly caused a few car prangs! and a host of other Kite based mischief. There is a tree near my house which fifteen years later still has the remains of one of my kites tangled in its top branches!
Kites have gone high tec since the 70s when Powell Stunters were all the rage (I made my own with this book, and it flew a lot better than the real thing too) but the book still has great educational value and appeal for the child. I think a child making and flying his or her own kite has a profound impact upon the young mind, and is immeasurably more valuable to the child than buying a kite.
This is the Sorcerers apprentice manual for kite builders.
An iconic essential for any kite builder aviator.
The only critisism is how the book was bound. mine's a pack of cards now, rather than a book! Battered but much loved.
Good book terrible binding
This is a great book. I am a kite novice and liked the beginning part of the book which is about the history of kites and then goes on into drawings of different kites.
The only bad thing about this book is the binding which is terrible. We have flicked trough this book about twice and the pages are all falling out!
