Product Description
This seminal volume explores European spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) currently functioning at the national and regional levels and the efforts of the European Union to create a framework for a multinational "infrastructure for spatial information in Europe" (INSPIRE). The book provides a practical introduction to the tasks involved in building European SDIs to exploit opportunities opening up as a result of the continuing development of modern geographic information technologies. The discussion focuses on developing an integrated SDI strategy for the European Union based on the INSPIRE initiative and the steps needed to create a legal framework for the wide-ranging project. The author also discusses implications for future SDI development and identifies key strategic issues that must be given priority in future debates about SDIs.
