This is a well presented boxed item including a drumming CD, a set of totem cards, (which are disappointingly small and printed in a single colour) and a book divided into three parts.
Once I'd got over the initial shock of the 'plain-ness' of the cards I turned to the book which is divided into three parts. The first part describes what totem animals and how they can be worked with. The information is presented in a simple easy to understand style. The second part contains a series of stories, John Matthews is, after all, a storyteller. He retains that sense of Oral tradition within the text. The stories help you to become familiar with the animals and thier place in Celtic lore.
Finally in part three Matthews explains in simple terms how to 'work' with the totems already met in the first two parts.
Unlike some of his other books, which are often difficult for the beginner to tap immediately into, the language and the simple instructions given, together with the CD, make this particular buy a good investment for someone who is looking for a way into 'Shamanism', or perhaps for a beginner to start to learn the art of visualisation.
The information provided on new ways to lay out the cards had eventually, for me at least, made up for their size and simplicity, I suppose for the price something had to give and the book and accompanying CD are great.
All in all a great introduction to the notion of Celtic Totems.
A highly usable boxed set for the beginner and Shamanic practitioner.
