Beautiful & true to the place
A classic Dutch novel set on the island of Ambon during the colonial era, it is a story full of violance, magic and loneliness. What sets it aprat from other other excellent pieces of literature is that not only is this book beautifully written, but it also reflects a deep understanding of the place where the story unfolds. Thus the author, who lived on the island herself, paints a realistic (though sad) picture of the Moluccas and their people, rather than just using them as an exotic background to her story.
