Excellent resource material on contemporary Africa5
This is a collection of 15 case studies of African countries. The countries examined are Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Nigeria, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana.

The aim of the collection is to examine patterns of conflict in these countries. Conflicts examined range from extreme cases (like genocide in Rwanda, war in Congo and the collapse of the state in Somalia) to less visible cases (like voter apathy and the AIDS pandemic in Botswana, military interventionism in Lesotho and ethnic conflicts in Nigeria). In every case, the nature of the conflict and the threat it poses is examined. This is followed by an analysis of the historical roots of the conflict and an examination of efforts being made towards reconciling these conflicts. Each essay ends with an examination of present and future options for reconciliation.

This is a well researched work that provides the reader with a detailed understanding of the particular conflicts being examined in the various countries. It will appeal to a reader with a desire to know more about current afairs in Africa or to students of development, politics and modern history in Africa.
