Thorough examination of the world's worst submarine disaster
A thorough examination of what still rates as the world's worst submarine tragedy. Since the Thresher was never recovered and due to the nature of the tragedy, nobody will ever know the true cause. This book describes the short life of the submarine up to its demise and this is necessarily factual and appears to be a thorough review. After the boat's loss it covers the enquiry and then presents a lucid and logical analysis of possible causes.
There is also reference to other similar disasters including the loss of the USS Scorpion and the Kursk. These are covered in far less detail of course but provide useful context. The author also sets the disaster in the context of the lost sailors, the effect on their families and the on-shore communities. This is poignant but never mawkish and again fits the overall approach of the book with is a relatively dispassionate analysis.
The book is well structured and jargon is avoided as far as posssible. Where it is used it is well explained so the layman has a sound understanding of the complex issues. At the end of the day this is a specialist book examining a single incident where there is limited information available as to the ultimate causes. It is a straightforward and informative account that will leave the reader with a better understanding of events.
