Average customer review:Product Description
This is a non-technical account of low carbohydrate living. It explains why it works, the health benefits, and most importantly, how to "do" the diet or, rather, diets since the book details three very different main approaches to controlling carbohydrates. It includes the basic low-carb diet (similar to Atkins or Protein Power), and the mini-binge diet (popularized as the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), plus several variations, finally summing up the basic principles which tie them all together. It gives readers the tools to create a way of eating that will fit their body, mind, and lifestyle - helping them stay slim, energetic, and healthy for life.

Review
I've seen many patients in my chiropractic practice lose weight and improve their health with various low carb programs. I'm impressed at how Dana has foregone the one-size-fits-all cookie cutter approach to dieting, instead giving the reader plenty of options, and a comprehensive understanding of the underlying principles needed for success. Readable, user-friendly, and easy to understand --Gary Knutson
am a born sceptic. I also have been obsessed with food for my entire adult life. When I am going to eat, what I am going to eat, where I am going to eat, if there will be enough food left by the time I get to the front of the line... Not a very nice way to live. This book HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! So far, everything she has said has been true. Everything that she said would happen, has happened. And it's not hard to do at all! Sure, the initial adjustment to serving a meal with no potatoes or bread is a little odd, but you get over it pretty fast. Somehow, this diet just clicked with me. After reading her book, I have at least 6 more reasons to eat this way than just to lose weight. That's not even my focus any more! She explained all the different approaches of all these other authors and shows you how to pick and choose which aspects of which approaches will work best for you. It's remarkably easy to read, too! I used this book along with Lauri's Lo-Carb Cookbook and the Greg Smithey "Easy Toning" tape, and I lost 10 pounds the first week and, I don't know if my initial measurement was wrong or what, but I lost and INCH off my waist! I have ordered the rest of Mr. Smithey's "Easy" videos now, and use Lauri's cookbook everyday. I have not yet found a recipe I or my husband didn't like. I hope you find something that works for you. But for my money, this was the best that was out there for me. --buggily
This book is the best summation I've seen on low-carb. It combines the contents of Atkins, Zone, and other low-carb diets with some tried and true wisdom. I first tried Atkins a few years ago on the advice of my doctor. After hitting 40 and being reasonably active, the pounds started to creep on. I lost about 25 pounds in 6 weeks and felt great, plus all my blood work results improved. Subsequently though, it seemed less effective. Cutting back on dairy and nuts and staying away from aspartame, as espoused in this book, led to better results. There are also other helpful suggestions for when you hit a plateau. Everyone's body chemistry is different, and the value of this book lies in the many 'tweaks' listed to make it work best for you. The author has done her homework and then some. You will also enjoy her breezy, witty conversational writing style as well. WELL worth the full...cover price. --jeanne425

A well-balanced diet excellently explained
Dana Carpender explains in great detail the reasons why a low-carb diet is the best choice, but her informal style makes for easy reading. She's researched the subject very thoroughly indeed, and leaves no stone - or kilogram - unturned, yet when you read the book, you feel as if you're chatting with a friend who understands completely how you like to eat.
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, and you've had enough of tiny, expensive low-fat meals with no taste, give this book a try. It's a great introduction to the low-carb principle that still gives you plenty of detailed and well-researched information.
Best of all, a low-carb diet is easy, nutritious, filling and absolutely delicious. And it works.
The best low carb book I have read.
I have read many of the diet books themselves and books around the topics. This is the most practical approach I have come across and includes lots of stuff which the hardline books tend to ignore such as indulgence and cheating! Also the only one specifically to address low carb for veggies and how to mix and match to suit almost anyone.
An Excellent 'Low Carbohydrate' Diet Book!
This book makes an excellent addition to any low carber's collection. Dana Carpenter has taken it upon herself to look through all the low carbohydrate dieting books and present the information in such a way that is not too technical or clinical. Above all, this book provides what other books on the subject usually lack - a friendly understanding tone. Instead of just another "How To..." diet book, she gives practical advice on a wide range of subjects that most low carbers encounter during their lifetime including dinner parties and 'cheating'. All I can say is that I cannot wait to read the follow up!
