Imperialism is bad business _as_business_
This book is a hundred years old and if you decide to read it it will be a problem for you that he is all the time discussing things and people that are now forgotten. Still he demonstrates with official statistics that for England Imperialism was not profitable _except_ for the Imperialists who got the jobs in the new colonies and produced the military hardware.
This analysis of Imperialism was much admired by Lenin, who in effect made it part of the Communist canon and it still holds good when it comes to the war in Iraq and the American military-industrial complex.
