When Dinah Lance, aka the freelance superheroine Black Canary - an expert martial artist with a potent 'sonic cry' - takes a job from the mysterious information-broker known as 'Oracle', little does she realise that a powerful new partnership is about to begin! 'Oracle' is, in fact, Barbara Gordon - the former Batgirl, left in a wheelchair after being shot by the Joker. While she is a computer expert with access to vast data repositories, she needs a field agent to act for her - and Black Canary fits the bill! Join the Birds of Prey through a series of hard-hitting contemporary adventures, and some team-ups with most unexpected allies, including the Huntress and Catwoman!

just starting out
Birds of prey is more of a cult status now than it was when this graphic novel was first released, the storylines here is more like several pilots with oracle (ex-batgirl0 teaming up with Black canary and (later0 huntress.
the plot thickens through the individual storylines, but on the whole this is not the greatness that is to come in gail Simone's era of the series.
Girls doing it for themselves.
Birds of Prey collects the first three one shot issues starring Black Canary & Oracle and issues 1-4 of the Birds of Prey mini series: Manhunt.
Former JLA member Black Canary has lost her sonic powers and is recruited by Oracle for a little globe trotting espionage. Thankfully the fishnets are soon dumped in favour of a snazzy black and gold costume in the first few pages and the artists are saved from the trauma of having to draw several hundred panels filled with the dreaded cross hatching.
The one shot issues are nothing to write home about really reading not unlike three episodes of Charlie's Angels.
The fun really starts during Manhunt with the introduction of Catwoman and Huntress, though even now I have to wonder why I'm chuckling at the old beef jerky and stooge partner routine as the method for Catwoman and Huntress getting past a guard dog. It's all very lightweight even considering the serious issues of globalization, high level fraud, slavery and exploitation of immigrants.
Oracle and Black Canary together
In this book, the girlfriend of the late Green Arrow, Black Canary, gets into and out of all sorts of adventures with the help of Oracle, the crippled, one-time Batgirl. It features the first issue of the comic Birds of Prey, as well as issues that include Lois Lane, Catwoman, Huntress, and Lady Shiva. The interaction between Black Canary, devil-may-care adventuress, and Oracle, the responsible Comissioner's daughter, is amusing. It's a good book full of fun. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys women in action.
