"The Janet and John" books emerged as a popular way to help children learn to read in 1949. These average English children of the 1950s are icons in the minds of the generations who grew up with them. Summersdale are thrilled to be bringing these classic bestsellers from yesteryear back into print as beautifully illustrated hardcover editions that make the perfect nostalgia gift items.

wonderful memories
I grew up with these books and I am delighted to see them back in print. Although, we live in completely different times to when they were first published there is something utterly enchanting about them. Looking at them is like re-visting your childhood, a time when life seemed more simple.
Fully Decodable so useful in a reading program
I wouldn't use a basal reading program to teach reading - I'm of the phonics school - but I really liked this book. Like most basal readers it has a list of words in the back, and I was about to write this off as old-fashioned when I realised it was fully decodable and clear, and he knew all the words. So it was actually quite motivating, and clear, using high frequency words in simple sentences for practice.
Recommended - particularly for the very early reader who will be motivated by the fact they read a "big book". Liked its innocence too, a lot of the reading program books now seem to have different values, people are always getting in trouble or laughs at other's expense. I've learned to watch out for ideology!
In this book children are children.
