Synopsis
Charles Dickens is the most famous and popular English author of the 19th century, and "Great Expectations" is often regarded as his finest work. The dramatic story of Pip's journey from high hopes to devastating disappointment offers profound insights into Victorian society and into the workings of human desire. In this guide, Nicolas Tredell introduces and sets in context the key debates about a novel which has provoked an immensely rich critical response. The extracts and essays included here examine "Great Expectations" in structural, symbolic, political, psychological, social and sexual terms, relating it to its own time and to a range of 20th century critical and theoretical perspectives.

Customer Reviews

I wish I had found this book earlier!!5
I can thank this book for getting me through my GCSE English literature exams. It was used to prepare me for writing essays in exam and non exam conditions. The book carefully examines each chapter and does good indepth character studies. I found the section which examined the themes dickens conveys extremely helpful. The highlighted quotes were also a very useful feature. The level of the book seemed to be slightly above GCSE requirements but this is exactly what you need if you want to go for a good grade. I do not know anyone else who used this book and so the ideas that I gained from this book seemed very original and impressed my teachers. The only drawback was that it was not totally aimed at GCSE students. It would have been perfect if it had exam style questions and tips.

In summary This book is perfect for exam preparation because it is original as not many people have discovered it yet. Too many people go into exams only having used letts revision guides and so examiners get fed up of the same ideas being used in the same essays. If you want your essays to be original ... get this book ... AND USE IT!!
