The Crown of Kings - Sorcery part four of four.
Our long crusade ends here with game book number 15; The Crown of Kings. This is a truly huge adventure with a massive 800 references, making it the biggest game book of all time. Appropriate, perhaps, as it's the last in the Sorcery series.
Your quest leaves you in the hills at the end of The Seven Serpents below your enemy's threatening castle abode. Once you manage to get inside, most of the book involves passing through certain barriers that divide the fortress up. Each barrier is a real trial to pass by and I won't reveal how this is done or any details. You'll just have to get a copy and work it out for yourself!
There are a couple of little tricks in there too, making it the hardest of the Sorcery series. The ending itself has a nice twist, and if you choose to play as a sorcerer instead of the warrior, the ZED spell provides a very nice addition to the storyline.
And then onto the final battle itself! Steve Jackson produces a curious and certainly original ending, but, in my opinion, should have made it tougher as this is the climax of a massive journey where you spilt a lot of blood, sweat and tears. The book is hard overall, but the final confrontation should've been harder still.
However, saying that, I really can't drag this game book down for I like it too much. The plot is very good and you can feel a great sense of satisfaction once you've finished and accomplished it all, particularly if you've had to work through the entire Sorcery series of four books. It has an epic feel.
Not only that, the fact this book is so big means you'll be occupied for a long time. It's a real quest of mammoth proportions and the artwork is pretty good too.
A brilliant game book, even better when played as part of the four book series; game books 9, 11, 13 and 15. Any Fighting Fantasy fan or anyone loving medieval/sorcery fantasy books will love and enjoy reading this. It's cool.

The ultimate Gamebook!
No review can justly sum up what this book represents in standards, This one surpasses excellence in all aspects. Steve Jackson i feel wanted to write the perfect book that leaves out no comprimise regarding the number of entries and the level of difficulty aimed at more seasoned or older readers.
This can be compared to his first single written book 'Citadel of Chaos', however the twists and turns, storyline and the no-so expected ending makes this the authority of all Game books.
Interestingly this has a Mordor-like feel in the location and a penetration of a fortress seems straightforward, but the vastness and complexity of the rooms/area and characters creates the scary atmosphere needed.
Interestingly the Japanese version has colorful maps included which i think detracts from the suprises in store, if only Myriador could complete the D20 version....
