Product Description

African food is bold and colourful, with rich earthy flavours and strong spicy undertones. The African Kitchen is the first book to combine the thrill of the safari with the excitement of pan-African cooking. Josie Stow takes us through a day in the life of a safari kitchen, from breakfast to nightcaps - you can enjoy game drive picnics, glamourous evening banquets, and a traditional Sengalese feast complete with hand washing ceremony. These meals can easily be re-created at home for all occasions. Ingredients such as chicken, corn, couscous, chillies and coriander are all readily available, but can be combined in new and exciting ways to create a truly African flavour.

Customer Reviews

Excellent for reading and cooking from.5
This book has loads of inventive recipes, mainly Southern African style but also from the North and Central Africa.

Although some of the recipes don't _quite_ work - the pineapple beer needs a lot longer to ferment than the time given - the book makes up the points for having beautiful photography and giving you the feel of being on safari in Africa.

Its worth buying if you're new to African cooking, but its also worth giving it a go if you already have a collection of African books. My mum's South African and my copy keeps mysteriously disappearing when she's visiting and then turning up in her bookcase!

"Good Taste"5
"Many Cookbooks have the effect of sending you rushing into the kitchen to cook up a storm. A select few inspire you to rip out the photographs and frame them. And one in a million ignites deep passions and evokes an instant bout of incurable wonderlust. The African Kitchen is one of those rare gems that succeed on every level..." - Fiona Davern, Elle Decoration South Africa, Nov/Dec 1999

"One of the world's most talented safari chefs"5
"Chef Josie Stow began her career cooking up treats for Roald Dahl - the twist in her tale is that she was lured to South Africa by one of his guests, and has been in love with the country ever since...." "The result is a journal photo album and recipe book which is the fruit of their 4,500km journey through the Kalahari Desert to five camps in four countries. Josie Stow & Jan Baldwin take their readers through a typical day in the life of a safari kitchen, from wake up calls to night caps..." Alasdair Riley - The Times Magazine 13/11/99
