The shortest way to sheer enjoyment
This is the second of Sarah Caudwell's brilliant series of mystery stories featuring legal historian Hilary Temple, and her young friends the barristers Ragwort, Cantrip, Selena and Julia. The complex plot involves a mysterious death (an accident?) of a rather dull young woman whose cousin, glamorous Camilla Galloway, is heir to a vast fortune. The puzzle is why should anyone want to murder Deirdre (except that she's a bore) rather than the heiress? Hilary is called in to investigate, and her search for the truth leads her eventually to Corfu, where Selena is having exciting nautical adventures , and a dramatic climax on a cliff. Full of humour, witty dialogue and memorable characters, these books are a delight. what a pity there were only four written, I wish there were a lot more!
