This work includes information, illustrations and self-help strategies to aid sufferers in this often taboo subject. It covers the basic functions of the normal gastrointestinal system, patients' symptoms and the extensive complications that occur in the course of inflammatory bowel disease (as Crohn's and colitis are collectively known) plus the implications for children with IBD.

An excellent book for ALL
This is an all-round good book. Clear, concise, accurate, nicely layed out, up-to-date & reader friendly.
I would have to disagree with comments such as 'for newcomers only' as this book isn't meant to be medical textbook, but more a guide for patients and families. Many patients do come to learn a lot of 'medical jargon', but many of them will lack the basic facts, which are all here in this book.
And, again, in response to another review; Yes, ALL of the information in this book is available online but then again, that is true for 99% of books written! And you may be forgetting that someone who is unwell and confused about a new diagnosis, may not want to search through masses of inappropriate information to find the stuff they want ... (and although it's 2004, for many less fortunate people, browsing the net isn't an option)
An excellent book.
Outstanding Guide to Crohn's, colitis and IBD
This new book was published in March and has received widespread attention and acclaim. It's a selection of the Canadian Medical Association's Personal Health Series and written by an IBD gastroenterologist at the University of Toronto Medical School. In very clear language and using excellent diagrams, Dr. Saibil discusses IBD's signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures and instruments, the role and effects of diet and nutrition, available drug options, pros and cons of surgery and possible complications, effects on sex and pregnancy, insurance and IBD, and other quality of life issues. One major plus is this book is up-to-date on the latest IBD research and treatments. Without question it's the best one volume guide to IBD available!
Clear and comprehensive
Fred Saibil's book is a pleasure to read. His language is clear and the content comprehensive. The only important subject not covered is probiotics and this can be remedied with my book 'Probiotics for Crohn's and Colitis'. A more detailed book on Crohn's and UC is Cliff Kalibjian's 'Straight from the Gut', but Saibil's book is more succinct. If you have a clear diagnosis, then a disease-specific book may be more suitable, as with Joan Gomez's 'Living with Crohn's Disease' and my 'Coping Successfully with Ulcerative Colitis'. As inflammatory bowel disease is a long-term condition there are plenty of reasons to acquire more than one book; and you can't go wrong with Fred Saibil's superb read.
