The defeat that Rear-Admiral Cradock suffered at Coronel at the hands of Maximilian Graf von Spee was recognised as a severe and humiliating blow to British naval prestige since the 18th century. This is the story not just the heroism of Cradock, but also of naval incompetence and lack of forsight.

Von Spee takes on the Royal Navy.
The story of Admiral Graf von spee's east Asiatic squadron from its initial success to its ultimate demise is one of WW1's most compeling sagas. Forced to operate a long way from freindly ports and bases, Von spee showed the kind of innovation and offensive spirit not normally associated with commanders of this war. The story of his success at Coronel followed by his hunting by units of the Royal Navy and his isolation in dangerous waters is well told by Bennet. He has used first hand accounts of the battles from the survivours and this gives the reader a fantastic insight into the world of the WW1 sailor far from home and in harms way. Von Spee's final demise is well documented by Bennet in this book. The Falklands battle draws on a wealth of eye witness and naval reports regarding this last major naval battle fought without the use of mines, torpedoes or aircraft.
This book is a must have for anyone interested in Naval history and is viewed as an important addition to my collection. Heartely recomended.
