This is an exploration of Britain's crucial contribution to the opening months of the Great War, where the savage battle at Mons destroyed the British but saved France from the Germans. David Ascoli's study is a monument to those who gave so much to save France.

A Good Buy.
Ascoli has produced a good workmanlike book on the opening phase of the Great War. French's strategy is critically examined, the descriptions of the actions are clear with good maps and the text is interspersed with personal recollections from the participants. A good buy.
The Mons Star
A surperb account of the BEF, explains just how these boys were never beaten even by superior numbers. A very well reserched account of the first few months of WWI with goods maps along with an easy to read style of writing. I would recommend to any enthusiast.
