Product Description

This work is a glimpse into life on the Hebridean island of Lewis from the closing years of the 19th century up to the 1950s. The author employs an unusual narrative technique, drawing on his mother Mairead's reminiscences, and presenting her experiences and conversation in the first person.

A moving story of the island way of life5
I loved this book! I've never been very keen on 'straight' history books, but this author has truimphed in bringing the past to life.
Through his obvious love of the people described, the characters shine out from the pages. His style of writing is beautifully crafed but accessible; I couldn't put the book down. The illustrations add extra poignancy to the stories.
Highly recommended, I hope he writes another volume. A true work of love.

children of the black house5
I was recently in Scotland and was looking for a book to bring back to Canada to learn about my Scottish roots.I was totally captivated by this story of a girl's survival in difficult times .As she grows up she and her family are beautifully depicted as they fight through the trials of WW1 ,shipwrecks and tragedy .I had never thought of my own people's history as epic but truly this book has changed my mindset.Alex Haley's" ROOTS" has many parallels though the author's style is refreshingly different.
This book is a treasure to any one who is of Scottish background.I loved it.Move over Alasdair MacLeod, you have a brother bard at your side.
