The fourth edition of Bradt's Croatia further strengthens its outdoors coverage, including new hikes and information on cycling, national parks and environmental issues. It has increased coverage of Croatia's literature and film scenes and includes a new section highlighting the sculptures that dot Zagreb, Croatia's thriving, lively capital. There's new information on Velebit, including the bear sanctuary at Kuterevo and more detailed coverage of the inland destinations of Papuk and Kopacki Rit. All this comes in addition to in-depth coverage of Zagreb and the historic cities of Dubrovnik and Split including the latest hotel and restaurant openings. Plus the book guides visitors from the country s dramatic mountains to its stunning Dalmatian coast with its thousand-plus islands.

"Croatia: The Bradt Travel Guide is erudite, iconic and informative."

From the Author
I've had a love affair with Croatia for more than twenty
years, ever since I first inter-railed round Europe in 1982 and got
stranded in Split for four days, waiting for someone to show up who never
showed. It wasn't difficult to find my way out to the islands of Braè and
Hvar, and from there to Korèula and on to Dubrovnik, by which time I was
off the inter-rail map, and into a different place altogether.

Three years later I got diverted in Trieste and ended up in Pula instead of
Athens, and worked my way down the coast as far as Split again, stopping in
at Rab, and then for a week at the lovely Paklenica national park (still a
Croatian favourite). To get back to where I was going I went up through the
country to Zagreb, and saw the Plitvice Lakes for the first time. I
travelled inland, and visited the pretty baroque town of Vukovar, then
wandered up through Osijek into Hungary.

It wasn't long before I was hammering at Bradt's door and clamouring to
write about (what was then) Yugoslavia. That book came out in 1989, just in
time to be washed away by the war - I spent 1991 glued to the television
set, watching in horror as Vukovar fell and Dubrovnik was shelled, and had
to wait a decade for my second chance.

My Bradt guide to Croatia was published in 2003 and now, four years later,
here's the third edition: every hotel, restaurant, museum and national
park, along with their associated costs, has been re-visited, revised and
re-worked, so what you have here is the most comprehensive and (I hope)
useful guide to the country - and the only one which covers all the
national parks and nature reserves.

Customer Reviews

A comprehensive, accurate and entertaining guide5
I found this Bradt travel guide more comprehensive and accurate than many of the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides I've purchased in the past. The author seems genuinely interested in the country and I enjoyed reading the funny accounts of his experiences - both good and bad. The Practical Information section is particularly useful (I did't realise I needed vaccinations to visit Croatia until I'd read this!)

Guarantee your trip's enjoyment....5
with this book. Recently got back from a trip to Croatia. I used the "Lonely Planet" & "Rough Guide" books as well, but mostly to cross-reference info with Mr. Letcher's guide. I completely concur with the previous reviewer's comments of how enjoyable this book is to read, regardless of whether you make the trip or not. But, if you do go to Croatia, the usefulness of the information, the organization and the presentation of the facts, and the innumerable little quips, humorous observations, and gentle warnings will come through for you. It's obvious Mr. Letcher enjoyed being in Croatia and his love of the country must have been detected by the natives. Neither of the other two books (though information packed) offer as much of the personal experience of the nooks and crannies of this (yes, I'm prejudiced!) fabulously beautiful country. If there's one bone I'd like to pick with Mr. Letcher, it's his mentioning of certain small towns along the coast that may now lose their mystery and their minimal tourist visitations. He has been to the out of the way places; hopefully some will stay that way.
Since we've been back, I still find myself picking up the book and re-reading passages. They're as evocative of the coastline, the wind, and the people now as before our trip. He's captured the true spirit of Croatia.

I share the author's love for Croatia5
..after just one recent visit (I also picked up the same author's book 'Zagreb' on the same trip). I can heartily recommend both books.
